Why Chutes and Ladders…?
Last night, I said I had made it through only five minutes of Grown Ups. I was not being totally honest:
Anyway…
This particular scene here has been causing me brain problems. I can’t get my head around why the writers would have chosen Chutes and Ladders as the game Adam Sandler is trying to get his young boys to play.
I understand the theme of the scene. The boys want to play only video games and text their nanny. ”Do you know how gross that is, for a kid to text his nanny?”, is what Adam Sandler says about his kids texting their nanny. It might be obnoxious, but is it gross? Maybe I don’t understand what gross means.
He wants to engage with them. He wants to get them out of the world of video games so they can experience the real world just like him and his friends did when he was a young lad. So he offers them Chutes and Ladders.
He said that his buddies and him would go down into the basement on a cold winter’s day and play Chutes and Ladders while drinking hot chocolate. If Adam and his sons were in a snowy environment, like mid-winter Minneapolis or something, I could sort of, maybe, get behind why, maybe, the ONE POSSIBLE TIME him and his friends got together for a rowdy game of Chutes and Ladders occurred to him.
But they aren’t in that kind of environment at all. They are in what appears to be California at the height of summer. How about tag? Kickball? Football? A pool? A bike ride? Something outside? How about basketball? Basketball is what got the movie going in the first place. You and your friends were the basketball team and you won a championship! Offer them basketball!
No. Chutes and Ladders. And he has the audacity, the unmitigated gall, to look sad when the boys basically tell him to cram his game up his chute.
That’s not even all. It’s not just him and his sons. He has a little girl as well. If you are jonesing for a game of Chutes and Ladders, how about you proposition the small girl who lives with you in your house? That would make more sense, right?
I know what it is. It’s that damned Chute and Ladders global conglomerate attempting to force feed us their ideology again. I hate it when the global Chutes and Ladders conglomerate attempts to force feed us their ideology. That bugs me so much.
